11 April 2026| Majlis Pelepasan Udang Galah Sungai Gembut

Assalammualaikum and Salam Sejahtera

Kota Tinggi, 11 April 2026 – A total of 200,000 shrimp seedlings were released into Sungai Gembut in a ceremony officiated by YB Dato’ Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin as an effort to strengthen the conservation of aquatic biodiversity and improve the economy of the local community.

The shrimp broodstock obtained from Sungai Gembut had previously gone through the breeding process at the AKUATROP hatchery and were released in stages to ensure the survival of the species in its natural habitat.

The ceremony also highlighted the involvement of students through the Lasykar Alam@UMT Squad as well as an innovation exhibition based on knowledge transfer by UMT researchers. This initiative is seen to play an important role in raising public awareness about the importance of sustainable resource management, as well as potentially promoting Sungai Gembut as an ecotourism and environmental education destination.

To ensure the sustainability of the project, UMT plans to establish a field study site in Kota Tinggi to strengthen research activities and knowledge transfer to the community, in line with the country’s blue economy agenda and sustainable development aspirations.

This program is the result of a strategic collaboration between Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), the Kota Tinggi Parliamentary Public Service Center Office, the Johor State Fisheries Department and the local community and is coordinated by the Center for Knowledge Transfer, Industry and Community Engagement (PPIJIM) together with the Institute of Aquaculture and Tropical Fisheries (AKUATROP), the Corporate Development Office and the Student and Alumni (HEPA) (PPH).
